Church School

Reflection

As a church school, we strive to ensure our vision underpins every decision, policy and action.

Our vision of 'Life Life to the Full' is based on the Bible, John 10:10, where Jesus said “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. This motivates us in all we do, so please do look at the whole school website which gives you a window into school life in a church school.

During Covid, when bubbles were separated, collective worship became virtual and parent visits to school were significantly restricted, we introduced this page on our website. This enabled us to continue to share with our community some of the many highly valued aspects of our school life as a church school, particularly collective worship, our Religious Education teaching and work as part of the church community, which would previously have been shared in school. Following feedback, we have continued to share these facets of school life with you.

Read on to discover the highlights of our Church School 2025 Summer 2 update.

Collective Worship

This theme for this half term is Trust.

From a Christian Perspective, trust is the basis for all stable relationships, including a person’s relationship with God. It is rooted in truth and will grow through consistent experiences of reliability and integrity. God’s commitment to humanity is seen in his willingness to trust ordinary people with carrying out his purpose through history.

Our big questions for the half term are:

* How do we show trust in our school and wider community?

*How do we repair relationships when trust is broken?

Collective Worship Summer 2 highlights

In the Summer 2 half term we reflected on the following each week:

Week 1 – This week we start to consider our collective worship theme for the half term about trust. Through the stories of the Boy Who Cried Wolf and Can’t you Sleep Little Bear, we consider who we trust and the impact of trusting others.

Week 2 – This week in collective worship, through the story of Gideon, we see how important it is to show trustworthiness in small things in order that greater responsibility can follow. We consider what this looks like in the classroom. We also look forward to our fathers and male carers event.

Week 3 - In collective worship this week, we continue to reflect on trustworthiness, thinking about the consequences when trust is broken. The children reflect on who trusts them and we celebrate World Music Day.

Live Life to the Full!

Week 4 – Thank you to Hazel class for their class assembly this week. This week we think about the role of Mary in the Bible and the trust she demonstrated.

Week 5 – This week in collective worship, we are exploring who and what we trust when we hit turbulent times in our lives.

Week 6 - This week, Amanda links our theme of trust to preparing for change as we look to the end of this academic year and the beginning of the new year. We reflect on the skills and knowledge we have to help us at this time and going forward.

Week 7 – This week we have a variety of celebrations to enjoy thanks to our music and Upper KS2 performance. Amanda draws our theme of trust for the half term to a conclusion as she encourages to reflect on being brave and trusting as we take our next step this week and at the end of this academic year.

Week 8 - This week we end our school year with our church service and events celebrating success and transition. We particularly focus on our wonderful year 6 and their journey throughout their time at our school. We very much trust that they have the skills, knowledge and personalities which will enable them to thrive as they move on to their new schools.

SIAMS

As the first school in the Diocese of Ely and the County to be inspected under the new Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) framework in September 2023, we are delighted to report that the judgement of the inspection is: the inspection findings indicate that Petersfield Church of England Aided Primary School is living up to its foundation as a Church school.

Under the new Framework, the graded criteria previously used in SIAMS inspections have been removed, resulting in only two possible judgements. We are proud that our inspection returned the successful outcome for Petersfield. This is in full recognition of our commitment to our school vision and significant work since the last SIAMS inspection as we continue to strive to ensure all members of our school community ‘live life to the full’. The SIAMS inspection report details the many, many strengths at Petersfield of which we are rightly very proud. Highlighted strengths include:

• The school is confident and courageous in living out its Christian vision for all to live life to the full. Leaders, including governors, make bold decisions which ensure its impact is felt.

• Committed leaders, including governors and staff know and understand the community the school serves. They work to ensure that pupils and their families are nurtured and supported. Links between the church, community and school are strong and mutually beneficial.

• The inclusive curriculum is designed so that all pupils can access learning. Pupils with additional needs, or who are vulnerable, receive bespoke support which enables them to flourish.

RE Christianity

• Religious education (RE) is tailored to the needs of pupils and the context of the community. As a result, pupils enjoy learning about a range of world religions and worldviews, including Christianity. This teaches them to respect and value the views of others.

• Collective worship is an important element of school life. Worship leaders, including pupils, use it to promote the vision and values. This also develops pupils' and adults' spirituality and own worldviews.

Please see our SIAMS report and letter to parents for more information.

Our Church Community

The children reflected on the most recent GenR8 visit thinking about what they enjoyed and any suggestions they could make to make it even better if….:

• I enjoyed the songs and would like more if possible. • I liked when they use the puppets to tell a story. • I would like them to do the bit with the puppets for longer next time because it is really fun. • I liked it when they acted out the bits when the family went to sleep and the stories from the Bible. • Could we have the RenR8 assemblies more often? • Could there be more 'joining in activities; like dancing to the music? • Could there be a follow up activity? • Could we be more active?

We were delighted to receive our certificate from Ely Diocese following our response to the Lent Challenge set by Bishop Dagmar.

Thank you to all the fathers and male carers who joined us virtually so the children could share with you how special you are.

Mrs Penrose continues to enjoy visiting other schools in her role as an Ely Diocese Regional Advisor (EDRA)

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to support REActive Church this term when Petersfield children from Key Stage 2 visited St Andrew's Church in Orwell to take part in the REactive Church activities run by Rev. Felicity and local church volunteers. The children said, "Someone sat down on a chair and pretended to be a tax inspector and we put sweets in a jar to represent money, then we had to decide if it went to the Romans or Zacchaeus. At one of the stations, we put on a little play about 'The Good Samaritan'. We learned about a miracle where Jesus changed a leper into a well person again. It was really interesting and the adults were really friendly. We learned lots about Christianity."

Our school choir continue to perform, most recently in church. The choir reported “As we reflect on the remarkable journey of our school choir, it is truly a joy to observe how far we have come over the past year. What began as a small gathering of enthusiastic singers has transformed into a vibrant and dynamic ensemble. This growth not only highlights the interest and enthusiasm for music within our school but also the commitment of each member to develop their vocal talents and to engage with the joy of singing. This year, we have staged several wonderful performances with songs from Cinderella, The Lion King and The Greatest Showman, each one more successful than the last. We eagerly anticipate what the new term will hold for our talented young singers, as their journey in music continues to flourish.” The children said “choir is very fun. We can sing really fun songs! We enjoy singing in the choir! We love to perform and sing really nice songs in choir! I enjoy singing with other people and learning new songs. I enjoy singing. The younger pupils enjoy themselves as well!”

Mrs Penrose joined with Rev Felicity, Amanda and Barrington school to plan next term’s Collective Worship. The theme is Love – one of our school values.

Our leavers events, including our church service provided the opportunity to celebrate of our fabulous year 6. Thankyou for being part of our school community throughout your time at Petersfield. We look forward to hearing about your continued learning journey and your many future successes.

Religious Education

As part of our EDRA visit, a foundation governor joined the EDRA to speak with our pupils about their experiences of the new RE curriculum. They found:

• The pupils could talk about RE in detail. • They could recall a range of facts and lessons, which both related to specific religions and those that drew links across more than one religion. • Pupils understood about the expectations around assessment and knowledge organisers. • Pupils could recall detailed prior learning and spoke about it with enthusiasm. • They enjoy and value the opportunity to make links between a range of religions, along with learning facts about a range of religions and beliefs. • They understand how this is important as a life skill and can articulate its importance in real life examples of interactions with others.
