Information to help parents and carers support their child(ren)
YOUnited supports children and young people with their emotional wellbeing and mental health.
Need help in a crisis?

All staff have a responsibility for safeguarding pupils at Petersfield. The class teacher(s) is primarily responsible for the care and welfare of your child whilst in school. We actively encourage parent involvement and support in all aspects of school as we firmly believe that a strong home - school parent partnership is in the best interests of our pupils. We actively seek to involve parents, pupils and all relevant staff in discussions to support pupil welfare to ensure the best possible outcomes and a uniform approach. Class teachers are available on the patio most nights after school and should the need arise, they will be happy to arrange an alternative time to discuss any concerns you may have. Please do request an appointment at the school office. If matters are not resolved through these discussions please do contact our Senior Leaders or Headteachers who will be happy to work with you to resolve the matter.
Tickled Pink
Following parent feedback whilst the school was closed to visitors, we introduced 'Tickle Pink' slips. These are slips given by any member of staff to pupils who are showing our school values and learning powers. Children take these home to share their achievements at home. This is a silver lining of Covid, especially for pupils who travel by bus, now school is able to welcome people into school. The children say: We like the tickled pink slips as it gives you motivation, it feels really nice to be noticed for our efforts and it shows us how well we’ve done.
Kindness Tokens

Kindness tokens – these are small tokens that are given to each other for showing acts of kindness across the school. These are for pupils to give to other pupils to show their appreciation. The children say: I like kindness tokens as it feels really good when your friends notice how kind you have been and it’s reassuring to know you are being a good friend.
Emotional Literacy and out Emotions for Learning (E4L) Curriculum
In response to the pandemic we introduced a weekly emotion of the week to improve the emotional literacy, vocabulary and understanding. Each class was responsible for adding to our display in the corridor. The children said: It is good to learn about new emotions and what they mean because sometimes we feel things and we don’t know how to explain how we are feeling. It is good to discuss when we have felt the focus emotion.
Thanks to our partnership with St John's College School, we have now introduced the Emotions for Learning (E4L) curriculum.

Designed to meet the emotional and social needs of all our children, the approach supports their mental health development and equips them with emotional literacy.
Teachers consciously form strong connections with the children, as it is through relationships that children first find the security and ability to regulate.
Through E4L children learn how to connect to the people, places and things that matter. These connections instill a feeling of security which allows children to take risks, explore the world around them and develop confidence in their own abilities.
E4L helps children to better understand and identify their emotions; develop empathy, increase emotional regulation and manage stress.
Children have learnt to Listen with Heart: By tuning in to ourselves, and the body language and thoughts and feelings of the person we are listening to, we can create a safe, calm space in which to practise the art of deep listening. When children learn to listen, they develop better relationships and become independent problem solvers.
Next, we are introducing Stilling: Children take time for ‘Stilling’ - guided visualisations to encourage children to tune in to themselves in a safe and relaxing space. Stilling gives children the quiet time and space they need for the unconscious processing of the day’s experiences.
We are introducing Dialoguing: Through dialogue teachers lead children through a process of ‘connect, explore, act’ to help them to problem solve for themselves rather than having teachers give answers. We connect first so that children know we understand what they are feeling and going through; we ask open questions to help them explore the underlying reasons for the problem; and we help them form their own plan for how to change the situation and restore things where needed.
Support in school
We are pleased to welcome pupils and their families into our school community regularly through out the school year. We pride ourselves in providing a friendly welcome and individually tailored support from staff and pupils to ensure a smooth transition into our school. Where possible, in advance of pupils transferring to a new school (e.g secondary school), pupil information is shared with the professionals in the new school to enable shared decision making about the appropriate transition pathway for the pupil.
We run an established programme of social skills / friendship groups to support children who may be finding some difficulties in building relationships with other pupils. These are run by our Teaching Assistants, and are a proven way of resolving difficulties and allaying worries. We encourage restorative justice and believe that often, by encouraging children to speak openly and honestly about the concerns or issues that they have in the presence of a mediating adult, matters can be greatly improved.
If additional support is required to help a pupil - there are various channels that can be followed:
Pupil Welfare Information

- The school nurse can be contacted by any parent with a health or welfare concern. Please ask for contact details at the school office.
- Further concerns, requiring the involvement of other agencies e.g. parent support advisers or specialist teachers can be requested if parents and the school complete an EHA (Early Help Assessment).
- We work with the YMCA who champion positive mental health at Petersfield and provided a counselling service for referred pupils.
We are delighted to regularly work closely with partner organisations in school, such as the NSPCC, to ensure our pupils are confident to speak out about any concerns. Below is the letter from our last session which outlines the additional information parents can access to support further discuss at home about staying safe.
