Maths For Parents
At Petersfield, we aim to inspire a love of mathematics in all our children while ensuring they develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to succeed. Our curriculum is carefully designed to meet the needs of every learner, offering the right balance of support and challenge based on each child’s starting point..

We use a small steps approach, ensuring children are secure with key concepts before applying them to more complex problems. Through a mastery approach, we focus on deepening understanding, building fluency, developing reasoning and enhancing problem-solving skills.
To help children communicate their ideas clearly, we place strong emphasis on the use of precise mathematical language. Learning is further supported by concrete resources and visual representations, enabling children of all ages to develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical ideas.
At Petersfield, we follow the White Rose Curriculum as the core structure for our maths teaching, adapting it where needed to suit the needs of our children and school community. This provides a clear and systematic framework, ensuring progression and coherence across year groups.
